There’s always been a debate about whether or not two basketballs can fit in one hoop.
Some say it’s impossible, and others say it all comes down to the size of the ball and the hoop. So, what’s the answer? Well, I’m here to settle the score.
I decided to put this to the test. I took my regulation-sized NBA basketballs and tried to cram them into the hoop. They wouldn’t go.
Then I grabbed my non-regulation mini balls and tried again.
And voila, they fit!
So, can two basketballs fit in one hoop? No, two NBA-sized basketballs cannot fit in one hoop. However, two more miniature basketballs can fit in one hoop just fine.

It all comes down to math. If the hoop is big enough and the balls are small enough, two balls can fit into the hoop at once. It’s all a matter of proportions.
A regulation hoop is 18 inches (46cm) in diameter. This is consistent across different levels of play, from the NBA to college to high school.
A Men’s regulation basketball is 9.4 inches (24cm) in diameter. Now let’s do some math. If we take the diameter of the hoop (18 inches) and divide it by the diameter of the ball (9.4 inches), we get 1.8839.
So, for a Men’s regulation basketball, the ratio of ball to hoop diameter is 1.8839 to 1.
However, if we use a smaller ball – like a mini basketball or playground ball – the ratio changes, and two balls can fit into the hoop simultaneously.
For example, a mini basketball has a diameter of 5.5 inches (14cm). If we divide the hoop diameter by the ball diameter, we get 3.2727.
So, for a mini basketball, the ratio of ball to hoop diameter is 3.2727 to 1.
NBA/NCAA Men’s Basketball
The official size for an NBA men’s basketball is 29.5 inches in circumference, with a weight of 22 ounces.
The diameter of the ball is 9.43 to 9.51 inches, making it the standard size seven ball. This size is also used for men’s college and boys’ high school basketball games.
The ball’s weight and size help players control and shoot the ball during gameplay.
A heavier and larger basketball would be more challenging to control and could cause injuries to players.
The size of the ball is just right for NBA players, making it an essential part of the game.
WNBA/NCAA Women’s Basketball
The dimensions of a women’s basketball in the WNBA and NCAA leagues differ from men’s basketball.
For example, the WNBA ball measures 28.5 inches around, or 72.4 cm, one inch smaller than the NBA ball.
This size is also known as a standard size six ball, and it typically weighs between 18 and 20 oz.
In contrast, the women’s ball has a diameter of 9.23 inches or 23.44 cm. So when you try to fit two women’s basketballs into the hoop at once, the size difference is clear – two balls just won’t fit.
Take a look at the math. The regulation hoop is 18 inches in diameter.
When we divide that number by the diameter of the WNBA ball, 9.23 inches, we get 1.9488.
The math confirms that two WNBA regulation basketballs would be impossible to fit into one hoop together.
This smaller size helps to accommodate the needs of female athletes while still providing a challenging and engaging playing experience. One researcher confirmed that a smaller basketball enabled women to perform higher on basic skills such as shooting, passing, and dribbling.

If we do the math, we can see that the ball-to-hoop diameter ratio for a youth size 5-8 basketball is 2.6 to 1, and for a youth size 9-11 basketball, the ratio is 2.0667 to 1.
